November 2008

To the polls please....League members, Anna Bastian, Sally Stubbs, Louise Mason, and Anne DeSouza Ward, responded to a request from the Mayor's Office to help drive people to the polls on Tuesday, November 4, to vote.  People thanked them for their efforts, saying how much they appreciated it. Non-partisan league action at its best!

"Divas of Voting" - our LWV-Melrose team - walk on behalf of the Melrose Alliance Against Violence - The League's "Divas of Voting" team shown at above (Anna Bastian, Louise Mason, Anne DeSouza Ward, and Joyce Zeiner, with Richard Bastian behind Anna), participated in the 13th MAAV Annual Walk & Candlelight Vigil. The MAAV thanked our League for its support and participation in the event.  Over 300 people gathered together this year to “Step it Up!” for MAAV and raised over $21,000! Every person truly made a difference.  The funds raised from MAAV’s Walk will go directly to core programs such as raising awareness about domestic violence in the community, providing education and prevention programs in the schools, and helping victims of relationship violence.  If League members would like to continue their support, please contact Jacylin Bird of the MAAV.  The LWV-Melrose would like to extend its thanks to Louise Mason for her special efforts on our behalf.

October 2008

Ballot Question Discussion - On October 18 we sponsored a panel discussion to inform voters about the local ballot questions involving the sale of alcohol in Melrose. The City Solicitor, the Substance Abuse Coordinator, and the Police Chief participated, which was filmed at the MMTV Studio to be aired several times before Election Day (Tuesday, November 4).

Registering High School Voters - In September, League members visited Melrose High School to register voters. Many students said they had registered during the licensing process. Approximately twenty completed registrations were turned in, three of which went to cities other than Melrose. Some adults who had moved since last voting either took forms to mail in themselves or registered with us. Some students also took forms to complete and mail in on their own. The most heart-warming event occurred after a student registered and then asked if he could take a form home to his mother who was due to become a citizen shortly. Blank forms were left wit the MHS staff in case of further need. To be registered for the November 4, 2008 election, the forms have to be at the appropriate Election Office by October 15.  We registered a dozen students

Victorian Fair - We had our usual booth at the 28th Annual Fair.  This year we registered 30 people.

June 2008 - Melrose League Celebrates Its 60th Anniversary!
