Melrose’s Ballot Drop Boxes and Vote by Mail

Are you voting by mail this year?   If so, you can drop your ballot in a mailbox, free of charge. You can drop it off at City Hall.  Or you can drop it off in Melrose’s official Ballot Drop Box.

This new ballot drop box can be found in the Post Office alley off of Essex Street between the three blue mailbox and the grey Melrose City box.

Hints to voting by mail

  • Mark your ballot with a black pen, pencil or Sharpie. BLUE OR BLACK INK IS PREFERRED.
  • Make sure you sign and date the envelope where you put your ballot. Your signature should be legible.

The state mailed a tri-fold postcard to all registered voters that had not already requested a mail-in ballot.  That postcard can be used to request a mail-in ballot.  You may also request one online from the Secretary of State, or print out a Vote by Mail application for a ballot from the Secretary of State (website below) or the City of Melrose website. cityofmelrose.org/elections

There is a wealth of information on the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts website. sec.state.ma.us/ele/eleidx.htm.

On this website you can:

  • Find out if you are registered to vote.
    • You can also update your address, name, and party affiliation
  • Obtain a Vote by Mail application
  • Find out where to vote
  • Track Your Ballot. Track its progress as it is mailed to you and then back to City Hall as it is received and counted.

Earlier is better

  • The deadline to return an application to vote by mail is October 20th.
  • The deadline to register to vote in November is October 24th
  • Submitted ballots must be postmarked November 3rd and receive by Friday Nov. 6th

However, given the anticipated increase in volume expected, we would like to encourage voters to vote early – either by mail in ballot or by early in person voting.

Early Voting for the November 3rd Presidential Election takes place Oct. 17-30 at Memorial Hall, 590 Main St., Melrose.  Updates will be provided on the Melrose election website.  www.cityofmelrose.org/elections
